the lakes / lake district

About a week ago we spent some wonderful days in the Lake District. We were also in Manchester and London, but more about that next time. Lake District, also known as the Lakes, is located in Cumbria and the easiest way to get there is with a direct flight with SAS to Manchester. We rented a very blue Mercedes that took us between the rolling hills and the deep lakes. It’s more than four years since we were last here and the scenery is just as charming and fantastically beautiful as then. My old Canon accompanied me again and I knew immediately that we would have needed several more days to take in all the beauty that surrounded us. As you probably already knew, autumn is my favourite season and the Lake District is the quintessential place for autumn and all its wonderful hues. There is so much time, so much space for large and small reflections and most importantly opportunities for all of our culinary needs. Of course stilled our hunger with spicyThai food when we arrived in Bowness-on-Windermere, husband ordered Somtam (papaya salad) as usual, and I a hot noodle wok. After lunch we strolled around the small neighbouring village of Windermere and enjoyed the bright sunshine while locals sat on the outdoor terraces and warmed themselves with coffee, not tea.

We lived a few miles east of Bowness-on-Windermere; Linthwaite House is a small and charming hotel with magnificent views over Lake Windermere. Here we shared some cosy moments in front of the fireplace surrounded by English seniors. I think the typical age was 70 and my husband and I managed to lower it down slightly. We enjoyed a classic afternoon tea while the fog swept around outside and to my great joy, they could offer good gluten-free options for both breakfast and refreshments. The actual breakfast was a small chapter itself, it felt like an episode of Downton Abbey when we walked down the stairs and past the crackling fire. In the lounge the butler showed us to our table and we ordered from the a la carte menu. To be serviced by 3 very attentive waiters while we enjoyed the beautifully presented breakfast was perhaps a little over the top. But it was certainly a good meal.

Our planned hike up Scafell Pike was hampered by the weather, so instead we went to the children's writer and illustrator Beatrix Potter's Hilltop and Hawkshead and also poet and philosopher John Ruskin's Brantwood. Magnificent views awaited us around every corner and also heartily good food! We ended up in an old stable at Brantwood who served gluten- and lactose-free soups and salads. At Jumping Jenny the fire was lit, we warmed our cold hands around a cup of steaming hot tea and munched on a dark chocolate cake while the rain smashed against the windows. The surrounding area has a huge park where you can spend several hours getting lost and just below Brantwood lays Coniston Water framed by high hills and inaccessible mountains.

One evening we enjoyed a meal at Wild &Co., an intimate little restaurant which we had all to ourselves. Locally produced ingredients, a very nice bartender and a huge variety of beers made both me and hubby happy. The starter was almost too good to be true, it was almost top class. The remaining dishes were also good, though I can still remember how good the first course was. During the trip, I was impressed and surprised by how easy it was to get gluten- and lactose-free options, whenever we had a meal the staff was always happy and offered good options.

My vegetarian diet would soon be broken by a visit to The Wild Boar, a tavern that appealed with its own smokehouse and microbrewery. All meats are smoked lightly before the barbeque. Husband chose a boar chop and I chose an extra-large steak that was designed for my hungry company. When traveling with my husband I’m always expected to order an extra of everything and also some additional dishes. A hungry husband is not someone you want to hang out with :). When we were both satisfied, I focused mostly on the greeneries on my plate while husband made a "sacrifice" and ate of all the meat on my plate. If you ever are in these neighbourhood I would certainly recommend a visit to this place. The interior is so rustic with low ceilings, open fires, huge wild boar heads on the walls and a bathroom with very vintage vibes. Next time I'll tell you more about our visit at L'Enclume, Britain's best restaurant!

weekend in Stockholm

For hubby's birthday I surprised him with a classic afternoon the at the Cadier bar and dinner at Mathias Dahlgren's Matbaren. We left Elsa with a friend and checked in at Grand Hôtel for a our mini vacation. The afternoon tea was just as excellent as expected, they offered a great selection of gluten and lactose-free options including an assortment of sandwiches, scones with lime curd, whipped butter and cream, homemade jams and tasty pastries. And of course hubby enjoyed a glass of Champagne from Pol Roger to all the goodies.

After the tea session a nap was on the agenda and after that we took a stroll around Skeppsholmen and Kastellholmen. The weather was just perfect and the views idyllic. Stockholm is just  so very beautiful and breathtaking with its mix of nature, water and grand architecture. It amazes me everyday how this bustling city can be so tranquil. We had a cinnamon bun/kanelbulle at af Chapmans (it's not a coincidence that hubby's birthday is at the same day as the annual cinnamon bun day...) and drinks at Långa Raden at Hotel Skeppsholmen. After more of the breathtaking views we had to fill up our energy with amazing drinks at Lydmar, one of my favourite places which hubby had never been before!  For your information I'm on my bikram yoga-period, so the whole weekend was free from alcohol (and will be for the next month). The drinks was of course great, I love Lydmar!

After a quick change we had a lovely evening at Matbaren, the staff was of course very attentive and the food good to great. Matbaren is awarded with one Michelin star, so of course we always expect a little bit more. The idea is to select one dish at a time, the portions are small to medium-sized and you will need at least three dishes to feel satisfied. And if you are my husband you will need five or six. He had the best dessert ever and was very happy with the whole setting, I on the other hand felt that there were limited options - I had a salad that was good, but it was only a salad. And I was recommended the herring, the waiter said that the chief could make up something new, but would rather stick to the menu. So my meat, lactose and gluten-free options was a bit limited, the bread was delicious though, I forget to ask if it was home-baked. The herring was also good, not great, As a Swede you eat lots of herring and this dish was beautifully presented, but did not charm me. And the great part was when the staff said that they wanted me to leave the restaurant with wonderful memories,  so the waiter apologised for "tricking" me to choose the herring. Of course they could make up something new and they did - I had a fantastic cod that really left me speechless. Okay, but only for five seconds, then I continued with words such as "ooh" and "aah". We fell into bed at around 2 am, satisfied and happy.

We woke up 5 hours later with such energy, dressed in our plush bathrobes and comfy slippers we headed to the spa and floated around in the stillness for an hour before diving into Grand's giant breakfast buffet. We ended our fantastic staycation with a fika in Old Town with Elsa. More of that next week!

bergslagen
